SUPPORT THE CONCEPT THAT EVERYONE HAS THE RIGHT TO AGE IN THEIR OWN COMMUNITY
Protect Seniors from ‘Demovictions’ and forced renovations, by establishing a displaced tenant policy. People on a fixed income, including many seniors, are particularly at risk if demovictions occur. This means working with renter advocates and developers to establish clear, consistent obligations for developers whose renovations or new construction displace existing tenants (Note: the Displaced Tenant Policy was first announced in our Housing Plan)
Give seniors the option to stay in their community as they age, whether they choose to remain in their home, or move to a nearby residence. This means working with the provincial government, not-for-profits; and private sector partners to ensure appropriate housing is available at a neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood level.
Fast-track housing developed by not-for-profits or in partnership with BC Housing that will benefit low-income Vancouverites, vulnerable seniors, and/or people with disabilities (Note: the (Note: Fast-tracking certain housing developments was first announced in our Housing Plan)
ADDRESS SAFETY AND ACCESSIBILITY SHORTCOMINGS IN OUR FACILITIES AND BUILT ENVIRONMENT
As part of a comprehensive transportation and mobility review, ensure sidewalks and streetlights meet the needs of older adults, and others with limited mobility and falling risks
Consider the unique needs of older adults in the development of all housing policies, community centres, and other municipal facilities and infrastructure. This includes stairs/ramps, doors, bathrooms, etc.
Ensure that Vancouver’s homeless shelters meet the needs of vulnerable older adults, and that transitional housing opportunities are available to them as needed
ENSURE APPROPRIATE SPACE AND FUNDING FOR SENIORS’ CENTRES
Support the creation of new seniors’ centres – such as the recently-completed Killarney Seniors Centre, and upgrades to existing facilities where needed, such as the South Granville Seniors Centre
Look for every opportunity to create spaces for seniors’ activities when constructing new rental accommodation on City-owned land
(Note: constructing dedicated rental units on City-owned land is a core component of our Housing Plan)
Ensure that both community centres with seniors’ programs, and independent seniors’ centres, have the resources they need to create and facilitate opportunities for social interaction, as social isolation is one of the primary concerns of our senior population.
